The government exhibition in the city is trying to reach out to the public through stalls showcasing schemes and projects of the State government with a mix of entertainment and information.
Most major departments, including the Public Works, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, School Education, City Corporation, Horticulture and Agriculture, are represented in dedicated enclosures that have models to explain finer details of projects.
Visitors to the corporation stall, for instance, can see plans for the city’s civic development such as an eco-friendly crematorium, conversion of street lighting from sodium to LED bulbs, and plans to harvest rainwater run-off from the highways with innovative road design and drainage.
The School Education Department has decided to combine fun activities that demonstrate popular science concepts through seven interactive experiments for visitors, in addition to publicising its subsidised system of education.
At the Environment Cell of the Public Works Department stall, a new type of domestic sewage treatment plant, for processing up to 2,000 litres a day, is one of the choice exhibits. A mini herbal garden showing around 80 varieties of local flora and their medicinal qualities is meant to raise awareness about healthy living.
A recreation of scenes from major places of worship in the State may be seen at the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments stall.
Road safety and good driving practices are the focus of the Traffic Department’s stall. The usual fairground attractions – eateries and novelty item stalls, are present. There is a giant wheel to thrill children, and the cotton candy and ‘Delhi appalam’ sellers have been doing brisk business. Daily cultural performances in the form of dramas, songs and dances by economically-disadvantaged artistes are being held at the stage erected for the purpose.
The fair underway at St. John’s Vestry Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School grounds is scheduled to end on January 28. The exhibition is open from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. every day.
