Law enforcers in the Central region have launched a publicity blitz to spread awarness of ‘Kavalan App’.

The aim is to encourage the general public to use the app to seek police assistance whenever they feel threatened or vulnerable.

Instructions have been given to Superintendents of Police of eight districts falling under the region to take the message about the app and its usefulness to the masses. The awareness campaign will also cover educational institutions. The app can be downloaded from Google Playstore.

The State police headquarters, in a recent communication to Inspectors General of Police of four zones, Commissioners of Police and District Superintendents of Police, issued instructions for carrying out a series of awareness campaigns through various modes about the app.

Kavalan App was launched by the State police in June as an important step towards ensuring women’s safety through instant police assistance in emergencies such as eve-teasing and kidnap.

Police sources say the app will be useful for women, children and the public as a whole, who can make use of it whenever they feel threatened or vulnerable. The message from the app will go to the State modern police control room in Chennai from where it will be flashed to the jurisdictional police station to act speedily to help people seeking assistance in an emergency situation, said the sources.

According to a senior police officer here, law enforcers in the eight districts of the Central region have also been instructed to create awareness of the app by issuing pamphlets in places where people gathered in large numbers for maximum benefit.

The State police headquarters has also instructed law enforcers to issue circulars to all police stations and write to schools and colleges about the app and its usefulness in getting police assistance at the earliest. Tiruvarur police have already taken the lead in taking the message to educational institutions, the officer said.

Police have been asked to install sign boards at vantage spots and organise awareness campaigns on women’s safety in every district.

A police officer in the rank of a Deputy Superintendent of Police in every district will be nominated for the campaign. Law enforcers have also planned to rope in self help groups and officials of the Social Welfare Department for the purpose.
