Five arrested for stealing teak logs

They were trunks of uprooted trees

Forest officials in Tiruvarur on Thursday arrested five persons on a charge of stealing trunks of teak trees that got uprooted in Cyclone Gaja last month.

The stolen logs were seized from the Central University campus. A tractor which was used to transport the logs was confiscated. Two among those arrested were security guards of the university.

A forest official said teak trees raised on the bund of Vettaru got uprooted during the cyclone. The officials received a tip-off that the tree trunks were stolen and being kept on the university campus.

The forest officials found six logs and conducted an investigation which revealed the role of three persons - Paneerselvam, Kanniappan and Deenadayalan - all from Neelakudi. The logs were kept hidden with the connivance of security guards Sivaramakrishnan and Murugesan. The five were arrested and a case booked against them under Forest Act, 1882. They were produced before a court at Nannilam, the official said.
