Staff nurses attached to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government hospital on Monday attended patients by wearing badges highlighting the need for fulfilling vacancies at the newly started speciality block and Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care centre.

As many as 126 nurses led by Leelavathi, State secretary of Tamil Nadu Government Nurses Association, took part in the protest.

They said though the speciality block had been functioning for more than a year, the Government was yet to fill vacancies of staff nurses. It had given additional burden to the existing nurses. It had affected the quality of care to the patients. The hospital needed at least 250 nurses. Hence, the government should take steps to post needed manpower to the hospital. Otherwise, the available infrastructure and instruments could not be utilised at their optimum level.
