Farmers to observe fast in front of Parliament

Tamizhaga Cauvery Vivasayigal Sangam plans to observe a fast in front of the Parliament on July 25 to draw the attention of the government to its demands, including declaring the Cauvery delta region as a protected agriculture zone.

Speaking to media persons at Mannargudi on Friday, its general secretary P.R. Pandian said that the Union government and the Cauvery Water Management Board (CWMB) should permit construction of a dam across the Cauvery at Rasimanal in Tamil Nadu in view of the Karnataka government’s attitude towards sharing the Cauvery water.

Karnataka never built up the storage at dams there during south-west monsoon with an ulterior motive. If the dams had a good storage, it had to release the rightful share of Tamil Nadu into the Cauvery as per the tribunal order. It never shuts the dam shutters. So the CWMB should monitor the storage levels constantly and ensure that the tribunal directions were followed.

Hydrocarbon project

Mr. Pandian urged the Central government to shelve the hydrocarbon exploration project proposed to be implemented in the Cauvery delta as such projects would devastate the entire region. The delta region should be declared a protected agriculture zone.
