The Thamizh Maanila Vivasaya Thozhilalar Sangam has extended support to the protest spearheaded by the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam against hydrocarbon exploration in the delta region.

A decision to this effect was taken at the Thanjavur district general council meeting of the association held under the chairmanship of R. Govindarasu, district president in the presence of the Communist Party of India, Thanjavur District secretary, M. A. Bharathi.

As per the resolution passed at the meeting, the association decided to extend its support to the agitations against the hydrocarbon project by organising awareness campaign in each village in the district from June. It was also decided to identify and protect waterbodies in the district from Grand Anaicut to Anaikkarai.

Another important resolution sought action against the officials who have failed to implement the MNREGS properly resulting in the farmhands running from pillar to post to get the benefits of the scheme.

Meanwhile, the CPI had convened a meeting of farmer associations and political parties to chalk out plans to take up the hydrocarbon issue to nook and corner of the district by organising village-level demonstrations and drum up public support for the movement.

Formation of village-level protest committees comprising representatives from farmer associations affiliated to other political parties and as well as the parent political outfits, organising of demonstrations in each village on a daily-basis, holding of street corner meetings, human chain demonstrations at taluk and union headquarters to press the demand of shelving of the hydrocarbon project by the Union government would be discussed at the meeting to be held on Tuesday.
