Export of human hair to Myanmar goes up

July 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - TIRUCHI:

Human hair has a good demand in neighbouring Myanmar, evident from the steady shipment of consignments from the Tiruchi International Airport.

Nearly 15 tonnes of human hair has been airlifted from the Tiruchi airport to Rangoon since January this year, airport sources said.

The shippers have been from different places such as Bangalore, Chennai and Delhi.

“This is a phenomenal jump in export of human hair compared to the previous year when the shipment was only 1.4 tonnes. The consignments come through customs-cleared bonded trucking from Chennai and Bangalore to Tiruchi airport from where it is dispatched,” says an airport official.

The consignments are lifted to Kuala Lumpur by Air Asia flights from where it is further transhipped to Rangoon – the final destination, say officials.

The cargo is sent in the available belly space of passenger flights of Air Asia which operates 21 services in the Tiruchi – Kuala Lumpur – Tiruchi sector every week.

“The shipment of human hair is not regular as perishable commodities, which account for 90 per cent of the export cargo from Tiruchi airport. Nevertheless, it has added to the export cargo throughput besides adding revenue to the fast growing Tiruchi airport,” the senior official points out.
