An engineering student was murdered in front of his girlfriend near Siruganur on the outskirts of Tiruchi city on Tuesday.
The incident occurred when the victim, K. Tamilvanan of Thinnakulam, was chatting with his girlfriend, a nursing student. While he was a final year student in a private engineering near Samayapuram, she was pursuing nursing in a private college in the same area.
Tamilvanan and the girl, who knew each other for eight years, went out on Tuesday. After visiting some places on Tamilvanan's motorcycle, they arrived at a spot on Lalgudi-Siruganur Road around 8 pm. While they were chatting, a group of four persons came to the spot and questioned their presence at the odd hour, leading to a verbal duel between Tamilvanan and the group.
One of them stabbed Tamilvanan with a knife on the thigh, leaving him bleeding profusely. They then escaped. Hearing the girl’s cries, passersby rushed to the spot and called 108 ambulance service. But Tamilvanan died on way to hospital.
On information, SP, Tiruchi rural, Ziaul Haq rushed to the spot, where the two-wheeler of Tamilvanan and a few other items were found. He said four teams, each headed by an Inspector, had been formed to nab the accused. Though initial reports indicated that the girl was sexually assaulted, police said she did not make any such charge.
