Employees and officers of the Heavy Alloy Penetration Project (HAPP) staged a demonstration in front of the factory premises in the outskirts of the city on Friday protesting the Centre’s move to corporatise some of the ordnance factories in the country.

They alleged that the government was planning to corporatise and allow 49 per cent foreign direct investment in ordnance factories, which formed the backbone of the defence establishment.

The move would raise a question mark over the livelihood of about four lakh employees.

The Centre should give up the move, especially in the wake of threats faced by the country from various neighbouring countries.

They claimed that three former Defence Ministers, including President Pranab Mukherjee, in his then capacity as a Defence Minister, had assured that ordnance factories would not be corporatised. But the Centre has ignored these assurances, they alleged.

The agitation was led by Kandasamy, coordinator of the struggle committee.
