Doctors’ associations and forums should adopt villages and ensure proper treatment to the poor people for achieving the goal of health care delivery to the masses across the country, said V.M. Muthukumar, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathidasan University.
Delivering a special lecture at the fifth annual conference of the Diabetes Club of Tiruchirapalli here on Saturday, he said there were several doctors’ associations and suggested that each one of them adopted a village.
He said the Indian system of conventional medicine was well received not only for better diagnosis but also for healing various diseases. “Our ancient saints and seers had laid strong foundation for leading a healthy life,” he said referring to health-related verses of Tirumoolar.
K.G. Rajamanikham, organising chairman of the conference, said that there was a growing increase in the number of diabetic patients in our country.
Less or absence of physical work was one of the reasons for the disease.
M. Senthilvel, organising secretary, the club organised several programmes to create awareness of prevention of diabetes.
The walking rally, for instance, organised last year, had gone down well with the residents of the city.
A similar awareness for college students had resulted in a change in the food habits of a majority of students. The club would shortly release a report on Type I Registry on diabetes for the people of Manikandam block.
N.S. Prasad, Vice-Chairman, M.S. Ashraf and S. Ponniah, both patrons, and V. Ravindranath, Joint Secretary spoke.
Earlier, Dr. Muthukumar released a book on ‘Current controversies and consensus in diabetes’ brought out by Micro Laboratories and the first copy was received by Dr. Rajamanikham.
