Rich tributes were paid to the freedom fighter Dheerar Sathyamurthy at his native place Tirumayam near here on the occasion of inauguration of ‘manimandapam’ constructed at an estimate of about ₹ 40 lakh by a philanthropist Sakthivel on Thursday. Chinthamani Ammal, president of the Azhagu Thevar Trust, declared open the ‘manimandapam’.
Kumarai Ananthan, former president of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, unveiled the bust-size statue of Sathyamurthy and called upon the youth to study and understand his sacrifices. He said that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and former Chief Minister Kamaraj had a great regard for Dheerar Sathyamurthy. He suggested that the state government should permit display of an official portrait of this great leader at all schools, government departments and local bodies.
Srinivasamurthy, one of the grandsons of Dheerar Sathyamurthy, underlined the need for documentation of the life and history of the freedom fighter so that the future generation would be able to understand his great deeds. He handed over a few letters and photographs of the late Dheerar Sathyamurthy to Mr. Sakthivel in this regard.
The family of freedom fighter Amir Hansa of Mela Kodumalur in Ramanathapuram district was honoured. A citation presented on the occasion referred to donation of gold and land to Netaji Subash Chandra Bose towards freedom struggle. Balakees Sulhai, freedom fighter’s daughter and Syed Gani, his grandson, were presented with Lifetime Achievement award and a cash purse of ₹ 52,000.
T. Pushparaj, district president of District Congress Committee, inaugurated the stone slab depicting the biography of Theerar Sathyamurthy.
