Alongside developing scientific temper, students, as future citizens, must fulfil the constitutional duty of upholding and protecting the soveriegnty and unity of the country, Justice T. Raja, Judge, Madras High Court, told a gathering of students on Tuesday.
“Nurture the habit of respecting the national anthem and the national flag, the Constitution, and its ideals and institutions,” Justice Raja said, delivering the convocation address at Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology, a Deemed to be University, at Vallam near here .
Irrespective of caste and religion all were equal before the Law, he said, calling upon the younger generation to refrain from differentiating people based on such factors. A person ought to be judged based on character and wisdom. Self-confidence, hard work, obedience, clear thought, patience and wisdom were the requirements for scaling heights in life.
Hailing Tirukural as the reflector of the Tamil civilisation that existed before 2,000 years, Justice Raja, who spoke in chaste Tamil, said G.U.Pope, who came to spread Christianity in the land of Tamils, was captivated by the splendidness of the language and translated the classic Sangam treatise on the art of living in English.
Justice Raja conferred degrees on 528 male and 340 female graduates, 16 Ph.D scholars and 36 M.Phil scholars. Nineteen gold medals, 18 silver medals and 16 bronze medals were presented to rank holders.
Chancellor K.Veeramani presided over the function.
Presenting a report on the institution’s achievements, Vice-Chancellor S.Velumani said PMIST had received the prestigious award of ‘Best private university in India’ from the Association of Chamber of Commerce and Industry, New Delhi, on World Entrepreneurs Day.
