Thanks to the setting up of a dedicated Cyber Crime Cell by the City Police, securing protection against rising incidences of cyber crimes is no more a hassle. With the dedicated cell in place, the police are well placed to deal with challenging assignments in the information age to tackle the technological sophistry of 'smart' and 'invisible' criminals.

The specialised unit headed by an Inspector comprises carefully handpicked personnel equipped with computer knowledge and proficiency in cyber operations.

The first of its kind unit in the Central Zone, encompassing eight districts in Tiruchi and Thanjavur ranges, the cyber crime cell will inquire into various types of complaints including threat e-mail, phishing, online fraud, copyright infringement, recording and software piracy, cyber stalking and sex-related offences, obscene SMS, currency and document counterfeiting, spoofing, hacking, and virus dissemination.

Hardware logistics have been provided to the cyber crime cell functioning at of the Office of the Commissioner of Police in the city.

A cyber laboratory that will contain gadgets costing Rs.16 lakhs including disk forensics, mobile forensic tool kit, cyber investigation tool kit and a CDR analyser is to be set up to aid the investigation.

The Cell will take the help of experts from cyber law college and institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology and the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, whenever necessary, according to the Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kumar Yadav.

Law enforcing authorities have planned to impart hands-on training in cyber operations to 24 constables attached to the City Police. As cyber criminals operate with sophistication to cheat huge amounts from gullible people, the need for a dedicated preventive mechanism was much felt; Mr.Shailesh Kumar Yadav said inaugurating the cyber crime cell on Friday. The cell will at present be with the City Crime Branch.

The cyber crime cell was formed in the wake of an order issued by the State government.

The Chennai City Police, Coimbatore City Police, and the Crime Branch CID, having jurisdiction throughout the State, already have dedicated cyber crime cells.
