The Tiruchi branch of the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association has called for creation of more posts at K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College here for successful implementation of the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme through the Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital attached to the college.

In a meeting held at the hospital on Friday, the association requested the government to sanction posts of assistant professor in the departments of cardiology, neurosurgery, surgical gastroenterology and urology where currently the only existing post is of chief doctor. The association has also requested that additional assistant professors be appointed in the paediatric surgery, paediatrics, anaesthesia, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, and radiology departments. To ensure outpatient services are rendered effectively, the Association has requested the number of Associate Professors in Departments of Medicine and Surgery be increased from three to seven units, one for each day of the week.

New courses

The Association has appealed to the government to start postgraduate courses in specialties like biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and radiology. Another demand was for the rotation of managerial posts like Vice-Principal and Medical Superintendent to ensure administrative experience for all staff.

S. Selvapandian, president, sais a second medical board functioning under the Joint Director of Health Services should be disbanded to prevent dichotomy in the district through two medical boards functioning at the medical college hospital and district headquarters hospital.
