CPI urges CM for an integrated bus stand

July 18, 2011 10:55 am | Updated 10:55 am IST - TIRUCHI:

The Communist Party of India (CPI) urged the Chief Minister to come out with an announcement on the construction of an integrated bus stand in the city and on the expansion of the Gandhi Market in the forthcoming Assembly session.

A resolution adopted at the city committee meeting of the party held here recently said the central bus stand is inadequate to tackle the increasing vehicle population and this has caused difficulties to people. The presence of the historic Gandhi Market also led to congestion.

The Chief Minister during her election campaign announced that steps would be taken for the construction of a full-fledged integrated bus stand and the proper expansion of the Gandhi Market. The works on both projects should be commenced with immediate effect.

Traffic snarls have become the order of the day in the Gandhi Market area, Tennur high road due to the failure of the Corporation to remove encroachments. The roads should be widened after removing the encroachments.

The City Police should post additional traffic police personnel in the busy areas like Central bus stand, head post office, Gandhi market, Chathiram bus stand, TVS Tollgate to regulate the traffic. The police should take an initiative to ensure vehicle users strictly adhere to the road rules.

The meeting complained about the slow progress of the Coleroon drinking water scheme. The Local Administration department should take steps for speeding up the execution of the works.

The main roads in the areas like Woraiyur, Ponmalai, Kudamuritti, Puthur which were dug for laying drinking water pipelines have not been properly closed. The Corporation should relay these roads immediately.

O. R. Sriraman, Corporation Councillor, presided over the meeting. T. Indirajith, district secretary of the CPI, K. Suresh, city secretary of the party and others spoke.
