Encroachments, mostly in the form of unauthorised structures put up by traders as extension of their shops, were removed at Nelpettai adjacent to the Gandhi Market in the city on Friday.
The Corporation launched the operation in the wake of the traffic congestion along the fruit shops which have come to occupy a substantial portion of the road, through which town buses operating towards Tiruverumbur were diverted about a couple of years back.
The encroachments had caused much difficulty for buses to manoeuvre through the narrow road. The eviction was launched after Corporation Commissioner K.Veera Raghava Rao conducted an inspection.
According to sources, unauthorised structures put up by about 60 shops were removed during the exercise. Corporation Executive Engineer S.Arunachalam supervised the operation. Mr.Rao inspected the site after the eviction drive in the evening.
