The Tiruchirapalli City Corporation has directed owners of all buildings under construction in the city to ensure that there was no stagnation of rainwater on their premises.

Corporation Commissioner M. Vijayalakshmi, in a statement issued here, said that owners of under construction buildings should ensure that water did not stagnate in temporary sumps or tanks and plastic containers on their premises.

Failure to do so would attract legal action, she warned. Besides, water found stagnating on such premises would be cleared by corporation workers and the charges collected from owners.

Ms. Vijayalakshmi said that those storing old tyres should ensure that there was no water stagnation in them. The tyres should be cleaned using sponge and stored at a dry place.

All residents should ensure that the drinking water stored in containers were kept covered and cleaned regularly.

Ground-level sumps should be cleaned regularly and whitewashed.

Those who fail to destroy such mosquito breeding sources would face disconnection of drinking water supply, she warned.

Ms. Vijayalakshmi claimed that the intensive preventive measures taken right from the beginning had helped control spread of dengue in the city.
