Consumers complain of quality deficiency in Aavin milk

Milk processing unit of Aavin in under installation

May 19, 2011 08:33 pm | Updated 08:33 pm IST - THANJAVUR:

The Thanjavur District Milk Producers Co-Operative Union (Aavin) here is procuring 40,000 litres of milk per day from 110 milk co-operative societies in composite Thanjavur district.

This milk is then supplied in bulk to Chennai. For local supply within the district, the union is procuring 9,000 litres of milk from Tiruchi and 9,900 from Madurai.

As the union does not have a processing unit of its own, it supplies raw milk to Chennai and takes processed milk from Tiruchi and Madurai to supply to its local customers. “A processing and homogenisation plant is under installation. Soon it will start functioning,” sources from the union said.

Though there are 365 registered societies in composite Thanjavur district, only 110 societies supply milk to the union. In Thanjavur district, mostly in Thanjavur and Kumbakonam, the union has recorded sales of19,000 to 23,000 litres of milk per day.

However, Aavin milk consumers in the district complain that the quality of milk of late has not been up to the mark, adding that the milk packets do not carry the date of packaging. Consumers feel that the service by some agents is also not good, commenting that some agents even abscond with the money of consumers.

Authorities in the union say that due to lack of date seals the packets do not carry the date of packaging. Soon the deficiency will be rectified. With respect to quality of milk, the authorities said that no compromise will be made. With respect to agents bungling the supply, steps have been taken to streamline the supply, they said.
