The Tamilnadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association, Ooranipuram, has urged the State government to ensure construction of a new bridge in the place of a damaged one across the Grand Anicut Canal Puduaru river at Vettuvakkottai in Orathanadu taluk at least by June next year.
The TPWAA Ooranipuram unit president, Bharathiraja, said that a portion of the bridge was damaged two years ago and when this was brought to the notice of the officials concerned, an inspection was carried out an an assurance was given that a new bridge would be built at the earliest.
However, there was no sign of any progress and the pedestrians and two-wheeler riders cross this bridge with fear as they could not afford to take detour of three kilometres to cross the river and reach their destinations from Vettuvakkottai, he said.
