CM to donate elephant calf to temple

Sri Mariamman temple in Samayapuram is all set to get a female elephant calf donated by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

The four-year-old elephant has been christened “Masini”. Formalities of donating the elephant have almost been completed.

The calf has already been brought under the control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR&CE), sources privy to the developments told The Hindu .

The calf, hailing from Mudumalai in the Nilgiris, is being nurtured in a natural environment in Coimbatore district.

A team of veterinarians and forest officials have expressed satisfaction over the health of the animal. They have been asked to make the calf fit for travel before it is to be transported to Samayapuram.

Sources added that it will reach Samayapuram on February 23, a day before the birthday of Ms. Jayalalithaa. The formal donation of the elephant to the temple would take place on February 23 or 24.
