The office of the Deputy Inspector General of Tiruchi range on Wednesday organised an awareness programme for college students to create a peer support system.

A total of 150 students from 10 colleges, two each from Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Karur, Perambalur and Ariyalur, attended the event which was inaugurated by Ziaul Haque, Superintendent of Police, Tiruchi.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Haque urged the students to join hands with the police department to become ‘awareness ambassadors,’ a title they should consider an honour.

“Youth decide the course of the nation. With the cooperation of the students, we hope to facilitate easy communication, especially among the youth in the range as they learn and impart what they learn to their peers,” he said.

Trainers discussed Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, Information Technology Act, Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, Motor Vehicles Act, Child Labour Act, and their key points, besides answering queries regarding the functioning of the police.

The selected students will form a Police Boys and Girls Club, which aims to bridge the gap between the students and the police department.
