Civic body rolls out rewards for home composting

With the decentralized solid waste management initiative getting streamlined, Tiruchi Corporation Commissioner N. Ravichandran believes encouraging composting at home is the way forward.

The city generates about 450 tonnes of solid waste every day, and nearly 200 tonnes are being processed at micro compost yards while the rest needs to be done at home, Mr. Ravichandran said.

“Around 10,000-15,000 households already have their own compost pits at home. We are now encouraging students to motivate their parents to join the initiative. Children who have already received training on how do segregate waste and compost at school will do it at home from now on,” he said.

To encourage student participation, a competition has been organised. “733 students will win a bicycle each, 733 will receive a digital watch each and 733 will receive an English dictionary each. This has been done at the cost of ₹50 lakh and it will be awarded to students in July,” Mr. Ravichandran said.

The civic body will also hand out roof garden kits, which include bags, plant pots and other equipment required for gardening. “The compost made at home can be used as fertilizer and plants can be grown. Some families are already growing organic vegetables at no extra cost,” Mr. Ravichandran said, adding that this project will kickstart soon.

Crediting the citizens for their active participation, Mr. Ravichandran said people had adapted to the changes quickly. “We notice that most households segregate their waste themselves. They have understood the necessity for segregation and are willing to make small changes in their routine to ensure that waste is disposed off properly.”

Several startups are approaching the corporation to launch mobile applications to simplify dry waste collection, mentioned Mr. Ravichandran. “We are in talks with them. We will decide on it soon.”
