Civic body plans water ATMs

The Tiruchi Corporation will soon commission a few community drinking water supply systems with treatment plants and automatic vending machines in the city. These are being established with private participation,

Though the Corporation does not face much of problem in supply of drinking water, the community systems are planned to provide treated drinking water at affordable cost to people who seek such supply. Each of these systems will have reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment plant with an approximate capacity of 1,000 litres an hour, automatic vending machines and water chillers with other ancillary equipment.

The civic body has planned to set up such systems at about 40-odd locations in the city and has recently invited expression of interest for installing the systems at 27 locations under Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis. The private players, who will have to bear the entire expenditure for establishing the facilities, would operate the systems for 10 years before transferring it to the Corporation.

“ A litre of water will be made available through the water ATMs at ₹1. Alternatively, 20 litres of water can be obtained at ₹7. Four such systems are already under installation in the city and will be commissioned soon,” Corporation Special Officer-cum-Commissioner, N. Ravichandran, told The Hindu.

Mr. Ravichandran said that Corporation has identified the locations where the community systems can be established. Mainguard Gate, Gandhi Market, Marakkadai and Big Bazaar Street are among the locations where the water ATMs are currently under installation. Some of the ATMs could be located on the outskirts, he indicated.
