The city police have put in place a comprehensive security arrangement for the by-election to the Tiruchi West assembly constituency on Thursday.

Over 1,300 police personnel including men and officers from the central para military forces have been drawn for bandobust duty in order to ensure free and fair polling. Police personnel have been deployed at all the 240 polling stations falling under the Tiruchi West assembly constituency, of which 75 of them have been categorised as ‘vulnerable'.

Mobile parties

Police sources here said 43 striking forces and 18 mobile parties also form part of the elaborate security arrangement made for the smooth conduct of the by election.

The Superintendents of Police of Perambalur, Ariyalur and Tiruvarur districts; two Additional Superintendents of Police; five Deputy Superintendents of Police and 10 Inspectors from other districts have also been drafted for election duty in addition to the City Police strength to augment the security arrangement.

Para military personnel from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Central Reserve Police Force and Central Industrial Security Force would also be deployed at the polling stations. Striking forces would be provided to all Inspectors and Assistant Commissioners of Police and the manpower strength at the check posts have been augmented.

The police stations at Cantonment, Thillai Nagar, Woraiyur, E. Pudur and Government Hospital besides part of K. K. Nagar and Palakkarai fall under the Tiruchi West assembly constituency where women voters outnumber men. All security-related arrangements have been put in place, said the Commissioner of Police E. Ma. Masanamuthu.

The sources said para military personnel would be deployed at the Saranathan College of Engineering in Panjappur which is the counting centre.
