Doctors at the GVN Hospital at Singarathope in the city have performed hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy on a 55-year-old woman with advanced rectal cancer.
Advanced cancers of colo-rectal region require a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Pritoneal carcinomatosis was hitherto considered incurable and only palliative and symptomatic treatment was offered. Currently there has been a paradigm shift involving aggressive surgery, complemented by intra-operative chemotherapy to maximise the cure rate, a hospital press release said. A team of doctors, including G. Senthil Kumar, surgical oncologist V.L. Balaji, medical oncologist Arun Seshachalam, and anaesthesiologist M. Siva performed the procedure, the release said.
