In response to public request, the Tiruchi Rural Police authorities have established a check post along the Tiruchi – Karur National Highway at Pettavaithalai.

The check post would function round-the-clock with manpower strength headed by a Sub-Inspector of Police deployed in shifts to man the unit.

Pettavaithalai has been chosen by the police to establish the check post as it borders neighbouring Karur district.

Four police personnel would be deputed to man it at any given point of time. Fitted with a couple of surveillance cameras, the check post would cover about 30 km falling under its jurisdiction along the Tiruchi–Karur national highway.

The check post has been established for multiple reasons such as to keep a tab on movement of criminals upon receipt of information from the adjoining district, said police sources here.

Increasing vehicle density on the Tiruchi – Karur national highway has prompted the police to set up a check post along the busy stretch.

Connecting important cities in the western belt such as Erode, Tiruppur, and Coimbatore, the Tiruchi–Karur NH has been witness to rising movement of passenger vehicles and goods carriers, including those transporting sand over the years.

The check post would attend to information regarding vehicles that had caused accident in Karur district and proceeding towards Tiruchi to intercept it at the border point itself, said a senior police officer.

One of the cameras installed at the check post faces the Tiruchi side while the other towards the Karur route.

In addition, the check post would respond to emergency situation and issues brought to its notice by the local people, the sources said.

The police decided to establish the check post to put in place a visible policing mechanism along the highway.
