Bus services have been badly hit on Nagamangalam-Inamkulathur route because of extensive damage to a causeway in Kuyavankulam near here.

Deep potholes and cracks were noticed about 15 days ago.

Since then, sensing the danger, heavy vehicles, including buses and lorries, have been avoiding the causeway, which connects Nagamangalam and Kavuthanaickenpatti.

Reports said that a few buses of the State-owned transport corporation, plying between Chathiram bus stand and Inamkulathur via Nagamangalam, had stopped visiting a few villages. The buses were being operated along Alunthur, leaving the commuters and schoolchildren in the lurch.

Residents of the affected villages said that although representations had been sent to the officials concerned, the damage had not been rectified so far.

No responsible official had visited the spot to take stock of the damage.

“Absence of bus services has affected our daily routine. We find it difficult to commute. Schoolchildren have been affected a lot,” said A.S. Muthusamy of Nagamangalam.

Reports said that more than 15 motorcyclists, who were unaware of the bad condition of the causeway, had suffered injuries after falling down at the dangerous spot.

K. Pichai of Chettiyuranipatti said besides setting right the causeway to resume bus services on the same route temporarily, a bridge should be built instead of a causeway.
