A static surveillance team on Monday night detained a car carrying 94 kg of gold ornaments worth ₹5.6 crore at Andipattikottai near Aravakurichi.

Officials stopped the vehicle heading to Salem from Madurai and found the gold ornaments in it. Since the value of articles ran into crores of rupees, they brought the car to the Collector office with police protection.

Grilled, its occupant claimed that the gold ornaments were meant to be supplied to a jewel mart in Salem and produced documents to prove his claim.

The officials were checking the veracity of his claim and documents. If genuine, the consignment would be released, they said.

Meanwhile, ₹1.39 lakh was seized from a micro finance company employee near Jayamkondam on Tuesday.

Officials of a flying squad intercepted a bike driven by D. Manikandan of Meensuriti at Mahimaipuram and checked his bag. They found ₹1.39 lakh in various denominations. Since he did not have valid documents, they seized the money and deposited it in the sub-treasury at Jayankondam.
