A tourist bus caught fire after the vehicle came in contact with a live overhead electric line near the Uyyakondam Bridge in the early hours on Friday.

The bus was completely damaged in the fire accident in which three persons sustained minor injuries.

The vehicle was hired to take a group of people from the city to Udangudi in Tuticorin district for a temple visit.

The driver had reversed the vehicle on the river bank road to take on board passengers who were waiting a few distance away, police sources said.

The top portion of the vehicle came in touch with the live electric wire and the bus caught fire within no time. The driver, cleaner and another person sustained minor injuries.

A fire tender and a water lorry were immediately pressed into service to fight the fire.

The operation commenced after the power supply was disconnected and it took about an hour for the fire fighters to completely put out the fire. However, the bus was completely damaged in the incident, fire fighters said.
