M. Subramaniam (54), an engineer by profession, is the BJP’s candidate for the Srirangam by-poll.
Joining the party in 1996, he is the State vice president of the BJP and belongs to Pillai community, which has a sizeable presence in the Srirangam constituency..
Hailing from Thillai Nagar in Tiruchi, he was the party national executive member from 2006 to 2012.
Mr. Subramaniam, who is the Chairman of Jayaram College of Engineering and Technology, contested unsuccessfully from the Mannachanallur Assembly constituency in the 2011 Assembly election.
Speaking to The Hindu on Friday, he said there was a feel good factor among the people on development and growth plank spearheaded by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Besides highlighting local issues, the BJP would cash on the image of Modi’s governance at the Centre. Claiming that caste might not be a factor in the bypoll, he said voters of Srirangam had given enough opportunities to the AIADMK and the DMK since 1977.
There were about 120 villages in the constituency and they were still lacking infrastructure and civic amenities.
