The 91st birth anniversary of late Sanskrit scholar Veeravalli Ganapadi Srinivasa Desikachariar was observed at Vaduvur in Tiruvarur district on Wednesday.

A group of scholars rendered verses from the Thaithriya Upanishad and ‘Naalayira Divya Prabhandham’ at the residence of the scholar.

The programme was arranged by disciples of Srinivasa Desikachariar who was one of the experts in Krishna Yajur Veda.

Among those who took part in the function were Mannargudi S. Ranganathan, general secretary, Tamil Nadu Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association and his family members.

Rig, Yajur, Saama and Atharvana Vedas were chanted besides ‘Naalayira Divya Prabhandham’ was rendered from October 28 to 30 at the Sri Kothandaramar Temple at Vaduvur in connection with the birth anniversary of the scholar, said Ganapadi N. Govindarajan, a disciple.

Desikachariar was honoured with the Rashtrapathi award as a Sanskrit scholar in 2001 and was chief examiner of Vedic knowledge in the Andavan Ashramam, Ahobila Mutt, Kanchi Mutt, and the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam. Several of his disciples were priests in temples within the country and abroad. The late scholar passed away on September 9 2014 at the age of 85.
