The Bharathidasan University has re-launched M. Tech degree offered by the School of Engineering and Technology (SET) after a gap of two years.
It was suspended in 2012-13 after admitting five batches, citing lack of infrastructure on pure science.
V.M. Muthukumar, Vice-Chancellor, who formally re-launched the school at a programme held at the university, said it would offer six-year integrated M. Tech programme on biotechnology, computer science, and technology, and geo-technology.
The programmes would focus on research, entrepreneurial skills, and industrial placement.
It would act as facilitator to students, who wanted to pursue a career in research, technology leadership, and business. It would try to match the industry expectations and skills provided by higher education sector.
Emphasising the rationale behind re-launching the programme, Mr. Muthukumar said it was in tune with the contemporary needs and expectation of students and industry. The programmes would act as platform for addressing the current issues in technology.
The students should make use of the opportunity.
While stating that the university was aware of the requirement of students, he said it had been systematically creating facilities. If needed, students could bring their infrastructure and genuine demands to his knowledge.
T. Thirunalasundari, Coordinator, School of Engineering and Technology, said the students would be given B. Tech degree at the end of the fourth year and M. Tech degree after six years. There was a provision to leave after four years with B. Tech degree. Those who cleared all papers without arrears were eligible for the rank.
Two semesters (eighth and twelfth) had been earmarked for the project. Provision had been given for industry visits, field trips, and summer trainings.
