Bank passbooks can be ID proof for passport

The External Affairs Ministry has decided to accept the passbooks (with photos) of scheduled private sector Indian banks and regional rural banks as proof of address and photo identity for applicants seeking passports, according to a release from S.Lingasamy, Regional Passport Officer. At present, passbooks or statement of bank accounts of public sector banks were accepted as valid proof of address while submitting applications.

The Ministry has been receiving requests for inclusion of passbooks issued by scheduled private Indian banks and regional rural banks in addition to the scheduled public sector banks. Hence the Ministry has decided to accept passbooks of these categories of banks, Mr. Lingasamy said in a release. The Reserve Bank of India website can be referred to in case of doubts about the status of a particular bank, the release added.
