Chennai Police arrest cultural outfit member on charges of sedition

Kovan, a member of People's Art and Literary Association has been consistently demanding closure of Tasmac shops through street plays.

A special team from the Chennai city police picked up Kovan alias Sivadass, an office bearer of the People's Art and Literary Association in Tiruchi in the early hours of Friday on charges of sedition.

The team took him to Chennai as a case had been registered against him by the Chennai city crime branch. Police sources said Kovan was heading the cultural team of the outfit which had been consistently demanding closure of Tasmac shops through street plays and audio visual CDs. The team landed at Kovan's house at Aravanur in Woraiyur area in the and took him to Chennai.

The Chennai City Crime Branch has booked a case against him under IPC Sections 124-A (sedition), 153 (wanton provocation with intent to cause riots) and 505 (1), police sources said.

Kovan was produced before Chief Metropolitan Magisterate, Egmore, and has been lodged in Puzhal prison in Chennai.
