The president of the Movement Against Destruction, K.K.R. Lenin, was detained by the police here on Friday when he attempted to observe an indefinite fast in protest against hydrocarbon exploration project in delta region.
The police intercepted the car in which Mr. Lenin was coming towards Thanjavur on the Tiruchi-Thanjavur Road a few metres away from the Collectorate. When the police requested him not to proceed with his agitation as permission had not been granted for the demonstration, Mr.Lenin alighted from the car and squatted on the road demanding that he be allowed to proceed with his intention to register his protest in a democratic manner. However, the police detained him and later released him in the evening.
Earlier, the police took into custody the president of Thamizh Desiya Viduthalai Iyakkam, Thyagu and the treasurer of Movement Against Destruction, Sadhasivam, who came to Thanjavur to take part in the demonstration along with Mr.Lenin on Friday.
Tiruvarur
Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam of Communist Party of India staged a demonstration on riverbeds at 36 places in Tiruvarur district to register their protest against the hydrocarbon project.
The demonstrators raised slogans condemning implementation of the project in the fertile Cauvery delta region and urged the Union and State governments to shelve the project for the benefit of future generation.
The Sangam members brought a hearse-like structure with them while they staged the demonstration by standing on the Vellaiyar riverbed at Velukkudi located between Tiruvarur and Mannargudi.
The CPI members joined the demonstration staged at their respective places and condemned the Union and State governments for implementing the hydrocarbon project which they said would destroy the very livelihood of farmers.
The demonstration was led by Sangam’s Tiruvarur district secretary Masilamani at Pandavaiyaru in Maangudi, by CPI Tiruvarur district secretary V.Sivapunniyam in Kattaru in Kottur and former MLA Ulaganathan at Mulliyar in Thiruthuraipoondi.
