The annual panguni’ car festival at Sri Venkatachalapathy temple, popularly known as Oppiliappankovil, at Thirunageswaram near Kumbakonam was celebrated with fervour and gaiety on Monday.

The decorated idols of Sri Srinivasaperumal and Bhoomidevi Nachiyar were placed on the wooden temple car and pulled along the four mada’ streets of the temple when the Tamil star thiruvonam nakshatram coincided with ekadasi day in the Tamil month of Panguni. Hundreds of devotees participated in the car festival and drew the wooden car.

Later in the day, the theerthavari at the temple tank was performed as part of the annual festival, which began with the hoisting of the Holy Flag on March 20. The annual festival would culminate on March 31 with anna perumpadaiyal, according to temple authorities.
