Lost and found: Babu, an inmate of Anbalayam Home in Tiruchi, was reunited with his family after 21 years at Chennai Central Station on Wednesday

An aged mentally ill inmate of Anbalayam had an emotional union with his family members after a gap of 21 years, a week after a State Crime Records Bureau team visited the home and established a link.

The team, led by Inspector A.S. Thahira, visited Anbalayam on instructions from ADGP-SCRB Seema Agarwal. He interacted with Babu, aged about 70 years, in Hindi and traced his origin to a village under Barotha Police Station limits in Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh.

Babu's brother Kamal and son Arif received him at the Central Station in Chennai and took him home.

They profusely thanked Ms. Thahira and the founder of Anbalayam T.K.S. Senthil Kumar, saying their strong belief that Babu would be alive and safe somewhere had been vindicated.

Mr. Senthil Kumar said Babu had been at Anbalayam since 2013, when he was rescued from near the Cauvery bridge. There were indications that Babu, who showed symptoms of schizophrenia, hailed from a well-off family. However, his native place could not be traced till the SCRB personnel visited the shelter.

The family members were apprised of the medication they needed to give to Babu for his well-being, Mr. Senthil Kumar said.
