Kanimozhi MP, addressing the VAOs conference at Needamangalam in Tiruvarur district on Monday.

Village Administrative Officers (VAOs) have a major role to play in reaching government schemes to people as they form the basic structure of governance at the village level said K. Kanimozhi, MP, at Needamangalam near here on Monday.

Speaking at the State level conference of the representatives of various VAO associations, Ms. Kanimozhi said that be it the Re. 1 kg rice scheme or the Kalaignar’s Health insurance scheme for life saving treatment, VAO certificates for beneficiaries are required. Certificates are also necessary for entering names in voters’ lists. Thus even elections cannot be held without the VAOs. Apart from birth and death certificates, they also maintain village accounts. They should help the government in implementing various welfare schemes in a proper manner, she said.

She assured that she would convey the demands of the VAOs to the Chief Minister who would certainly take the necessary step to fulfil them.

C.T. Meenakshi Sundaram, State president, TNVAOA presided over the conference. K. Venkateswaran, General Secretary and others participated in the conference.
