The 164th annual aradhana of saint composer Thyagaraja will begin in the saint's samadhi on the banks of the Cauvery at Thiruvaiyaru near Thanjavur on Friday.

The festival, which will go on till January 25, will be inaugurated by Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister for Environment and Forests. An important feature of this year's aradhana is the inauguration of the newly constructed Satguru Thyagarajar Illam on Thirumanjana Veedhi by G.K.Vasan, Union Minister for Shipping. Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha has been organising the aradhana every year.

On January 24, Pushya Bagula Panchami, the day when the saint attained samadhi, hundreds of musicians will render the pancharathnakritis of the saint composer in chorus and pay their homage. A huge pandal has been put up before the samadhi and two stages have been made ready for the singers .

Thyagaraja deemed as being one among the Carnatic music trinity (other two being Muthuswamy Dikshithar and Shyama Sastrigal), was born in Tiruvarur. He later moved to Thiruvaiyaru and lived in the house on Thirumanjana Veedhi till he attained samadhi. The saint has rendered thousands of kritis in praise of Lord Rama.

Nouka Charitham is one of the two dance dramas written by him.
