Speakers at a two-day seminar on road safety organised by the NSS Units of the H.H. The Rajah’s College here recently appealed to the students to strictly adhere to the traffic rules to avoid accidents. They also appealed to the student community to create awareness among the masses about using safety gadgets, especially helmets.

Presiding over the inaugural session, P. Sethuraman, Principal of the college, underlined the role of students in launching a sustained campaign on road safety, so that the number of road accidents could be reduced to a great extent. He said that in many cases, accidents were caused due to negligence or recklessness.

Delivering a key-note address, A. Veeramani, Sub-Inspector of Police, said that over-speeding and violation such as riding two-wheelers by three persons, drunken driving and non-use of safety belts in four-wheelers were some of the major reasons often resulting in grievous injuries to those involved in accidents. He said that students should play a pivotal role in creating awareness among the people about road safety norms.

The NSS Programme Officers, V. Murugaiyan, S. Ravichandran, M. Karuppiah and A. Shanmugam were among those who offered felicitations. They said that this was the second leg of the awareness programme being organised by the NSS units of the college. A similar programme would be held in the third leg in co-ordination with the Traffic police wing shortly.

A special drive for pasting the bull’s eye on two-wheelers and four-wheelers was taken up as part of the awareness programme. R. Senthilvelavan, Regional Transport Officer, led a group of volunteers and pasted the bull’s eye on about 100 vehicles in the town.
