Special team arrests notorious gangster

A notorious gang leader P. Guna alias Gunaseelan against whom several murder, robbery and kidnap cases have been registered in various districts was arrested by a special team of the city police here on Monday.

The team also apprehended Guna's accomplices – A. Pandian (24) and R. Muthumani (22) – and seized sharp weapons, two country bombs, a cell phone, a motorcycle and Rs. 4,500 in cash from them.

Talking to reporters here , the Police Commissioner, K. Vanniaperumal, said Guna (34), who had been absconding for a year, had planned to commit two to three murders. Stating that it was a challenge for the police to apprehend Guna, he said the special team had intensified its surveillance for three months to track him down . A gang leader with inter-district operations, Guna has 19 murder, robbery and kidnap cases registered against him in various police stations, with seven non-bailable warrants pending against him.

A native of Tiruchi district, Guna's area of operations covered Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Dindigul, Theni, Chengalpattu, Villupuram and Chennai, he said. Based on information, the special team zeroed in on Guna and his accomplices in Woraiyur here.
