Seminar on impact of media on society held at Tiruchi

A day-long seminar on the ‘impact of social media on life and education’ was held at Holy Cross College on Tuesday.

Prema Nandhakumar, noted writer, spoke on ‘media then and now’. She highlighted the scenario of handscripts, diary writing, and the preparation of texts which are still valuable tools for dissemination of news. She also elaborated on changes taking place in the media, from quick transmission of news to the use of different media for different purposes. She laid emphasis on the use of good language with simple words.

Mohan Sundararajan, a writer from Bangalore, spoke on ‘internet and traditional news media’ by focussing on the use of language in print and electronic media, paid news, breaking news, freedom of speech, guidelines and attributes of high professional conduct.

Pupsharani, Dean of Arts of the college, spoke on ethics of ‘advertising’ by throwing light on advantages and disadvantages and its impact on privatisation and globalisation.

Anu Smitha, assistant professor of English, Periyar EVR College, spoke on ‘dimensions of communications and its impact on society’ by focussing on different modes of communication and its process, the socio-cultural and political dimensions and the networking sites.

The principal Sr.Jeusin Francis, offered felicitation.
