Newer technologies to conserve environment were disseminated to teachers and research scholars from colleges and universities during a workshop on ‘remediation for clean and green environment’ organised by the Chemical Engineering Department, National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi (NIT-T), recently.
The purpose of the two-day workshop encompassing 16 lecture sessions delivered by resource persons drawn from Anna University, Chennai, and the host institution was to orient scientists and engineers on the challenges in conserving environment with the active involvement of public.
Institute Director S.Sundarrajan, in his presidential address, emphasised that public support was vital for making environmental conservation a reality.
Once the importance of environment is understood, people will follow the rigorous rules and regulations on their own as in other countries. Health, Safety and Environment being inter-disciplinary has to be studied together at masters level, he advocated.
Inaugurating the workshop, S.Arumugam, Additional General Manager, Research and Development, BHEL, Tiruchi, explained that in the backdrop of industries, particularly those in the power sector, causing significant pollution, BHEL had taken initiatives in the areas of manufacturing supercritical power plants, advanced supercritical power plants, fluidized bed combustion, integrated gasification combined cycle, and carbon capture and storage, for reducing the pollution.
At the valedictory session, G.Swaminathan, NIT-T Registrar and Head, Centre for Energy and Environmental Science and Technology, elaborated on how industries could conserve environment through afforestation. Calling for judicious use of water, he said potable water was depleting continuously. Third world war could be fought for water, he said.
Department Head J.Sarat Chandra Babu and Coordinators N.Anantharaman, Professor, and K.N.Meera S. Begum, Associate Professor, addressed the participants.
On Thursday, the Mathematics and Computer Applications departments initiated a two-day national conference on ‘Frontiers in Applied Sciences and Computer Technology’. Dr.Sundarrajan cited instances where mathematics could be applied in general science for real-time problems. The first day was marked by two lecture sessions.
The programme has attracted 71 research papers relating to application of mathematics and computing machine in various fields such as networks, fluid dynamics, coding, image processing, and algorithms. On Friday, a scientist from Defence Research and Development Organisation will deliver a lecture on ‘Electronics and Computer Science Programs in DRDO’.
