Railway junction bags Exnora award

The Tiruchi Railway Junction and the Tiruchi Corporation Office were among the institutions that bagged the annual Clean and Green Awards given away by the District Exnora on Saturday.

While the Railway Junction was selected among the Central government organisations, the Corporation was given the award in the category of State government institutions in recognition of their efforts at maintaining their premises clean and green. P.V.Vaithilingam, Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi and T.T.Balsamy, Corporation Commissioner, received the awards from Collector T.Soundiah.

The ‘Tiruchi Citizens Award' went to Transport Minister K.N.Nehru for his role in implementing the flood prevention scheme for the city. Among the other prominent winners in the awards list were K.Meena, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, who bagged the Exnora Innovator Award for designing a special software for visually and hearing impaired children and D.Mani, District Forest Officer, who was given the Exnora Excellence Award for motivating school and college students to plant about 15,000 saplings in the city.

Distributing the awards, Mr.Soundiah urged youth to be sensitive to the impact of global warming and initiate appropriate measures to check the phenomenon. He urged city residents and the youth to promote an affinity among children towards nature and called upon them to plant saplings of fruit bearing trees.

Dr. Meena commended the role played by Exnora in promoting environmental awareness among the city residents and youth.

The following were the winners of the other Clean and Green awards: College – Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College of Arts and Science for Women, Perambalur; School – Brindavan Vidyalaya; and Civic Exnora – New Selva Nagar.

Senthil Kumar Gopalan, founder, ‘Payir' was presented with K.N.Nagarajan Memorial Award for his contribution for rural development. M.Natarajan, an 85-year-old yoga master, and D.Srinivasa Prasad, social worker, were presented with special awards.

The annual District Youth and Students Exnora awards 2010 were also presented on the occasion: Outstanding Students Exnora - College – Srimad Andavan Arts and Science College; School – Sri Sivananda Balalaya; Outstanding Staff Advisors – Vijayalakshmi, Cauvery College for Women and Prabhu of Child Labour Special School, Sengulipatti; Outstanding Head of Institution Awards – V.Sujatha, Cauvery College for Women, and K.Anbarasu, National College, and Geetha Parthasarathy, Chinmaya Vidyalaya; Outstanding Supporting Institution Award – Shrimati Indira Gandhi College and Holy Cross College; Outstanding Environment and Youth Development Institutions Award – Chidambaram Pillai College for Women and Bishop Heber College; Outstanding Students' Exnora – Cauvery College of Engineering and Technology.

C.Balasubramanian, Secretary, in his annual report said the District Exnora has taken up a Save Cauvery Campaign aimed at preventing discharge of sewage into the river. G.Subramanian, president, and others spoke.
