The Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women will recommend to the government to take steps for speedy disposal of family dispute cases pending before various courts across the State, according to S.P. Sarguna Pandian, its chairperson.
Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, she said the number of family dispute cases had been brought down to 3,000 during 2007-08 from 6,000 about a decade ago. For ensuring expeditious disposal, the commission would recommend a few measures to the government.
“Family dispute cases pertain to personal dignity of women and their children and, therefore, should not be prolonged for years together.”
The commission would recommend a system like Lok Adalat for resolving family dispute cases. The concept of Lok Adalat had been more effective in speedy disposal of civil disputes involving land acquisition process or bank loans. It could be utilised for bringing about speedy relief to women. The commission would also recommend setting up of family courts in districts such as Tiruchi and Perambalur.
Underlining the role of advocates in resolving the family dispute cases, Ms. Sarguna Pandian sought their cooperation in bringing down the number of pending cases.
The commission had completed its sittings in all the districts. She would submit a report to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi by mid-February.
Earlier, Ms. Sarguna Pandian inspected a short-stay home for women by “Sontham” being run by the Tiruchi multipurpose service society and interacted with its inmates.
She also inspected the records and ascertained the vocational activities, health care programme and other amenities available at the home.
