June 18, 2010 09:13 pm | Updated 09:13 pm IST - TIRUCHI:

All overhead tanks in the district would be cleaned in a mass operation on Saturday in the wake of the diarrhoeal deaths reported in villages near Musiri on Thursday.

Collector (in-charge) V. Dakshinamurthy convened a meeting of block development officers on Friday and instructed them to take up the cleaning operation.

Officers were instructed to ensure and monitor that drinking water was properly chlorinated in the correct proportion. They have also been asked to ensure proper hygiene in public places in villages and towns.

About 10 more persons were admitted to the Musiri Government Hospital on Friday with complaints of diarrhoea.

However, Health Department officials said that the condition of all those admitted to the hospital were stable.

In a press release, Mr.Dakshinamurthy said special medical teams were still camping in the affected villages in the Musiri region and in Thayanur village near Tiruchi where the diarrhoea cases have been reported.

All sanitary officers in the district have been asked to monitor the situation in their respective jurisdictions and report any case of diarrhoea to the nearest Primary Health Centre/government hospital for follow up action.

He also appealed to the people of the districts to consume only boiled water and approach the nearest PHC or government hospital immediately in case of diarrhoea.
