Teachers should play an active role in motivating the students towards scientific principles, said M. Chidambaram, Director, National Institute of Technology–Tiruchi.

Speaking at a function to mark the National Science Day celebrations organised by Anna Science Centre – Planetarium here on Monday, Dr. Chidambaram said that teachers had a greater responsibility in inspiring the students towards research.

He also appealed to the parents to extend maximum support to their wards to participate in various competitions being organised by individuals and institutions.

Dr. Chidambram urged the students to develop the habit of reading books to develop their skills.

P. Iyamperumal, Executive Director, Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, Chennai, said that the Centre would start the ‘Ramanujam Mathematics Museum’ at the Periyar Science Centre in Chennai in July. The Museum would comprise about 60 models on various mathematical principles such as the ‘Pythagoras Theorem’ and ‘Exponential series’, with a view to motivating the students to understand the principles of mathematics.

A mobile exhibition containing the salient models would tour select schools in all the districts, he added.

T.M. Alagiri Swamy Raju, Project Director (In-charge), Anna Science Centre – Planetarium, said that several competitions were held as part of the celebrations.

Dr. Chidambaram distributed prizes to winners in the competitions.
