A section of members of the Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) were arrested here on Saturday after they attempted to indulge in rail roko agitation urging the Central government to implement the Sethusamudhram Ship Canal project without any further delay.

A group of DK members led by the organisation's headquarters secretary V. Anburaj assembled near the Periyar statue from where they planned to take out a procession to indulge in rail roko agitation at Tiruchi railway junction. The city police arrested the DK members when they attempted to take out a procession to go ahead with their stir.

The Sethusamudram project was a long-pending demand of the Tamils and its implementation would help in developing Tamil Nadu's economy besides creating job opportunities, the organisation said. Those arrested were later released.
