The Tiruchi Chapter of the Indian Institute of Metals (IIMT) has received the Best Chapter Award for overall performance for the tenth time.
TMAQ 09, the quiz on metals, and ManTRA 2k9” during September, 2009; formation of own website www.iimtiruchy.org; running of in-house journal METALL, conduct of evening courses on ‘Heat Treatment’ and other programmes for industries on metals and materials, and lecture programmes by inviting experts, have enabled the Tiruchi Chapter to wrest the overall performance award.
The Chapter Chairman S. Karunakaran, General Manager, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchi, received the award from Sanak Misra, national president, Indian Institute of Metals, during the National Metallurgy Day celebrations held at Kolkatta earlier this month. Complimenting the team members for its good work, the Chapter Patron A.V. Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchi, assured support for their future endeavours.
Mr. Karunakaran attributed the achievement to the dedication of Vice-Chairmen P. Nainar, R. Easwaran and S. Suresh, and the Executive Committee led by Hon. Secretary N. Rajasekaran. According to Mr. Karunakaran, the quiz on metals and materials for higher secondary students was a watershed. Over 480 students from 19 districts of Tamil Nadu and also from Karaikal region of Puducherry took part in the preliminary rounds at seven centres across southern Tamil Nadu. The semi-finals were held for 40 teams at the National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi. Six teams qualified for the finals. The past president of Tiruchi Chapter S. Pugazhenthy apprised the students about the opportunities in the field of materials engineering and metallurgy, and on the importance of metals and materials in the development of the country, on the occasion.
One of the teams representing the Tiruchi Chapter emerged as the runner up in the international Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz 2009 held at Kalpakkam. The team consisting of Balaji Srinivasan and M.S. Viswanath of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Silver Jubilee Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Tirunelveli, won a prize money of Rs. 10,000
Mr. Karunakaran exuded confidence that the Tiruchi Chapter will scale newer heights in the years to come.
