MAYILADUTHURAI: Construction of fishing harbour at Tirumullaivasal has been completed early this month. The work, taken up exactly a year ago at an estimate of ₹.9.25 crore under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) scheme of the National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development, has been implemented as per schedule without any time-over-run or cost-overrun.

The electrical work is being executed now indicating that the Fisheries Department would take over the infrastructure for regular maintenance and upkeep.

It has a fish auction yard, diaphragm wall, net mending shed, retaining wall, concrete road and vehicle parking area. “The diaphragm wall to a length of 100 metres will facilitate the fishermen to easily anchor their boats without any hitch even during high tides,” an official source told ‘The Hindu’ on Monday. The length of retaining wall is 400 metres and the concrete road, 550 metres.

The harbour was a felt-need of about 300-strong fishermen of a cluster of villages including Poolaiaru, Tirumullaivasal and Thoduvai. The fishermen who were hitherto depending on harbours at Poompuhar and Tranquebar, will be the largest beneficiaries as it would minimise their fishing schedule and also ensure immediate marketability through direct operation from this interior coastal village.
